A sharp lesson on the power of myth over history is provided by this ironic drama about a seedy truck-driver stranded in a village whose most prominent feature is a statue of a heroic anti-Nazi partisan. The trucker realizes that the unknown martyr is in fact himself, but, when he tries to tell the locals, he finds that an idealized dead hero is often preferred to a clay-footed live one.
