One of the most popular foreign films of its time sparkles again in a new print from the MGM-UA archives. Earnest American scholar Homer Thrace (played by director Dassin) journeys to the port city of Piraeus to rediscover the noble ideals of ancient Greece. But the glorious past is rudely shoved aside by the glamorous present in the form of free-spirited prostitute Ilya (Mercouri), whom Homer foolishly sets out to reform. This much-honored movie scored a Cannes Best Actress Award and an Oscar nomination for the vivacious Mercouri, and an Oscar win for Manos Hadjidakis's irresistible theme song.
