This ambitious historical drama explores questions of conscience in time of trouble. The action is set at the turn of the last century in Kastoria, a region of Western Macedonia where Greeks, Turks, and Jews live in a state of tension exacerbated by the 1897 war between Greece and Turkey. The story centers on a family of fishermen who attempt to carry on their trade as usual on the peaceful lake from which the bloom of the title rises. But the calm is shattered when the eldest son encounters a wounded guerilla left behind by his comrades.
